There’s a new iPhone in the family. Keeping with last year’s markup, Apple announced a lineup of four new iPhones during its “California Streaming” event earlier this week. The iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, and iPhone 13 mini offer incremental upgrades over their predecessors, with no significant changes to design apart from a reduction in the size of the notorious display notch. The Cupertino tech giant changes the look of its iconic smartphone every two to three years, content with adding a host of new features in between. The last time the iPhone received a visual overhaul was with last year’s iPhone 12 line, which brought back flat edges and featured updated screen sizes, resolutions, and display densities. Apple has been slowly evolving the phone’s design over 14 years, since the release of the original, the iPhone 2G, back in 2007. The one change that is instantly noticeable is display size. The largest iPhone in the latest lineup, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, has a diagonal screen span of 6.7 inches – nearly twice that of the iPhone 2G. Even the smallest available current-gen iPhone has a 5.4-inch screen. That’s nothing compared to the difference in resolution and pixel density – you could fit a little over 23 iPhone 2G screens (320 x 480 pixels) into that of the iPhone 13 Pro Max (1282 x 2778 pixels). In terms of screen size, the biggest year-over-year leap would have to be the iPhone 6 duo. The iPhone X marks the most drastic change in design, with a huge improvement to screen-to-body ratio. Since the tenth anniversary iPhone, the design has been largely the same, with the only significant changes being the reintroduction of flat edges with the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13’s smaller display notch.
